About me

My name is Gretchen, and I help people understand math. Gorble is a nickname my kid gave me, and it stuck.

I’m a senior math major, a long-time tutor, and a mother of four. I’ve worked with students of all ages—from middle schoolers who say they “hate math” to college students tackling calculus and differential equations. Some of my students are preparing for the SAT, others are returning to school later in life. Many of them are anxious, neurodivergent, or convinced they just “can’t do math.”

They can. You can. You just need someone who listens and explains things clearly.

I approach tutoring with care, calm, and structure. I don’t rush. I don’t make anyone feel foolish. And I believe that most people’s struggles in math come not from a lack of intelligence—but from unclear teaching and pressure that shuts learning down.

I’m especially comfortable working with students who feel left behind, whether because of learning differences, anxiety, or gaps in traditional schooling. I’ve also spent years helping non-traditional learners and bilingual students feel at home in their math education. I’m conversational in French and Ukrainian, and always happy to support students who are still building confidence in English.

Outside of tutoring, I’m finishing my degree in pure mathematics and studying the history and philosophy of math. I’ve designed math resources for community college students, and volunteered as a mentor with the Prison Math Project.

I offer in-person and online sessions, flexible scheduling, and a free first meeting to see if it’s a good fit.

Math doesn’t have to feel impossible. I’m here to help it feel human. I haven’t tutored anyone yet who cannot break through whatever their puzzle is. At the core of most all math troubles we have, I find the math isn’t the problem at all, but rather the language we use to talk about it.
